Educational Philosophy: Students learn best when they are actively involved in
learning. This class will use many types
of activities to gather data and analyze it mathematically. Students will participate in assignments that
make connections between math and the real world.
Class Regulations: Students are expected to behave politely at all times including
extending the courtesy of arriving on time.
Attendance Expectations and Policy: Students
are expected to attend all class sessions.
In the event that an unavoidable absence occurs students are expected to
make-up all work missed. A student who is absent three or more times, who fails
to make satisfactory progress, or who lacks prerequisite skills may be
withdrawn from the class. Each three tardies will be counted as one absence. If a student is more than 1/2 hour late to
class or leaves more than 1/2 hour early, he/she will be considered absent for
that class.
Homework Expectations:
For every credit hour earned
for the course, the student will spend at least two hours outside of class
working on coursework. Students may be
asked to keep a notebook containing notes and homework assignments. Homework assigned during a class is due at
the next class session unless otherwise specified. Credit for late homework may
be reduced by one half for each day late.
Help: Math tutors will be available to help you. Reference textbooks and computer software are available in the library and math classroom. The Internet is a valuable resource for math tutorials and tools.
Reasonable Disability
Accommodations:
Course Calendar/Schedule of Activities: All assignments
will be evaluated based on course outcomes.
They will be evaluated holistically as evidence of mastery of specific
course outcomes. If any assignment does
not demonstrate mastery it will be returned and the student will be given time
to bring it up to standards without penalty.
Students are strongly
encouraged to turn in work early enough that it can be evaluated by the
instructor, returned to the student, corrected by the student if necessary,
resubmitted to the instructor, and re-evaluated by the instructor before the
end of the semester. Assignments
submitted in the last days of class are unlikely to be graded in time to be
reflected on the grade report.
Tests: Unannounced
quizzes may be given during any class period. There is no make-up for quizzes
or the final exam. Failure to take the final exam will result in a grade no
higher than a B.
Grading: Students are graded primarily on the degree to which
they meet learning outcomes, not how much time and effort is put forth in the
course. The grading for this class is
outcomes-based. Students are graded
primarily on the degree to which they meet learning outcomes, not how much time
and effort is put forth in the course.
The grading for this class is outcomes-based. Students meeting standards for course
outcomes will receive a passing grade. Students exceeding standards for course
outcomes will receive a grade of A. Students not meeting standards for course
outcomes will not receive a passing grade.
Note to Students: The instructor reserves the right to change the syllabus and delivery
of course content based on the needs of the class.
